Star Wars: The Old Republic : EA to Make a ‘Significant’ Profit

I can’t wait for the OBT (Open Beta Test) to really begin my characters, especially after a taste of what dungoneering as a Lancer is like during PAX East. At the booth for TERA, we were brought into a secluded room with five individual PCs set up for one of five classes. I chose the Lancer, Mike chose the Slayer, a couple of other folks took the Sorcerer and Warrior, and an En Masse employee (Sam Kim, Producer) handled the healing. Thank God, too, because it turns out BAMs in high level dungeons aren’t exactly pushovers.

With the slow trickle of information and media for Funcom’s upcoming MMOG, The Secret World, today’s development is pretty huge. GameSpot has debuted a new The Secret World trailer, featuring the sleepy, and apparently zombie-infested town of Kingsmouth, which was recently revealed as part of Funcom’s continuing viral campaign for the game.

Warhammer Online : Night of Murder ReturnsWarhammer Online : Night of Murder Returns

 

 

The Warhammer Online Herald has been updated with the news that the annual Night of Murder event has made its return. The event is scheduled to run from February 9th through the 22nd and features special quests and rewards.
Players pick up the “Marked for Death” quest in every warcamp, scenario, and capital city.  They are also asked to keep an eye out for those NPCs and enemy faction players who are marked for death and to kill them when seen. Players can also be the ones marked and should be on the watch for killers in their midst.

Rewards include:

Basic – Butcher’s Blessing (+10% xp/renown/damage/incoming healing) and lasts for 3 in-game days
Advanced – Well-Mounted Skull (Places a pike next to the body of a fallen foe, topped with their head.)
Elite – Khaine’s Caress (event-slot item with career specific stats)
World Drop – Lobbin’ Noggin & Burning Blood Potion

What would Hallow’s End be without excessive amounts of sweet, sweet candy? Candy Buckets (prominently marked with an exclamation mark) are located in inns throughout Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, and Outland. Reach in and help yourself to a handful of assorted candy, which you then open by right-clicking it in your inventory. In addition, each candy bucket grants an experience point reward, or for maximum level characters, gold compensation. Note that you can only hold one Handful of Candy at a time, so make sure you open it before looting another candy bucket. Find all the candy buckets in each continent for achievements, and another achievement is earned by looting every last candy bucket in the land! If you’re wondering which candy buckets remain on your list, open up your Achievements panel and look for the relevant achievements under the “Hallow’s End” category, which itself is listed under “World Events.”

BioWare has long been considered the leader in creating personality for the player-character in its single-player games. None of this ever really has a huge effect on the game’s outcome, but it allows a certain level of player-driven character building that’s welcome and indeed an integral part of an RPG. It’s not surprising then that BioWare hopes to bring this to its forthcoming MMORPG. What is more surprising however is that ArenaNet seems to be taking a stab at it themselves in the forthcoming sequel to Guild Wars.

Review in Progress Part Four

This marks the fourth episode in our continuing journey through En Masse Entertainment’s TERA. In this installment, we take a look at questing, gear, the epic action and more. This will likely be the last installment of our TERA Review in Progress before our final score is handed out and we let you all argue over whether I’m right or wrong in the comments (hint: it’s subjective). It’s been a grand few weeks of TERA, really. As you’ve seen from the first review in progress, all the way up until now, I’ve found myself pleasantly surprised by what Arborea has to offer, despite what roadblocks there were at first glance with the game’s beta. I’m now level 30, I’ve done my fair share of questing, dungeons, and sought after the BAMs of the world like a pro with my guild at my back. This week, anxious guilds are vying for position in the game’s political Vanarch system, and next week we all start voting for the first group of territory rulers. In short, I’m still enthralled with TERA. But there are some cracks in the veneer.

Does one game have to win over the other, or do they each have unique strengths, both in gameplay and business model that a player might enjoy both? Let’s dive in!

BILL’S INTERNAL BATTLE
I’m not trying to play it safe when I say I fully see the benefits to both TERA and Guild Wars 2. That said: I can see myself being a whole lot more enticed by the latter. It’s just far more “new” to me, even though I’m loving TERA’s combat and world. What gets me about Guild Wars 2 is its sense of exploration and discovery. Meanwhile the combat and politics of TERA are what have me solidly enjoying that title. Luke and I are each going to briefly talk on three core components to any MMO and see how the two games stack up against each other.

Worgen is Requireed for Alliance Cataclysm

Behind the formidable Greymane Wall, a terrible curse has spread throughout the isolated human nation of Gilneas, transforming many of its stalwart citizens into nightmarish beasts known as worgen. The origins of this curse have been fiercely debated, but only recently have the startling truth come to light. Long ago, amid a brutal war between the night elves and the demonic satyrs in Kalimdor, a group of druids practiced a powerful yet unwieldy form that embodied the fury of the wolf Ancient, Goldrinn. Taught by Ralaar Fangfire, these Druids of the Pack sought to temper the uncontrollable rage inherent in their chosen form.

To do so, they willingly submitted to the energies of the Scythe of Elune, a mystical artifact created from Goldrinn’s fang and the staff of Elune. Rather than abate the druids’ fury, however, the weapon transformed Ralaar and his followers into worgen: bestial humanoids enslaved by their own primal instincts. Blinded by all-consuming rage, Ralaar’s druids tore through friend and foe alike during battle with the satyrs. Night elves wounded by the unruly beasts contracted a virulent curse that turned them into worgen as well. Desperate to stanch the affliction’s spread, Archdruid  Malfurion Stormrage mournfully banished the worgen to a pocket dimension of the Emerald Dream, where they would be in peaceful slumber for all eternity.

The worgen threat was contained for millennia, until Archmage Arugal managed to pull the wolf-beasts from the Dream. Summoned by order of King Genn Greymane, the worgen were used to battle Scourge forces encroaching on thekingdomofGilneaswhen wow gold quest. Yet the feral creatures soon spread their curse throughout the human population ofSilverpineForest, infecting Gilnean soldiers stationed beyond the Greymane Wall. Before long the affliction had advanced through the legendary barrier and was gradually eating away at Gilneas’s humanity. As reports on wow gold of strange attacks and disappearances rose, fear took root in the hearts of Genn’s people.

Exploring the Technical Side on Reddit

ArenaNet has announced that it will be hosting an Ask Me Anything Reddit event today at 10:00 a.m. PDT / 1:00 p.m. EDT. Participants will be able to ask questions about the game engine, tools, game play or anything else ‘techie’ that strikes a fancy.

With Guild Wars 2 out the door, our programmers wanted to take a some time to answer the burning technical questions that players and aspiring (or current) game programmers may have about Guild Wars 2 and about working as a programmer at ArenaNet.

The Ask Me (Almost) Anything session will start at 10:00 AM Pacific Time on October 17 on the /r/gaming subreddit and will run for about two hours.

That’s right, everyone! We are sending one lucky person and a friend to this year’s Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle, WA! We are raffling off a prize pack including two 3-day passes AND two round-trip plane tickets to the show from August 26th to the 28th. Also, the winners are going to have an awesome night of hanging out and having dinner with some of the Rusty Hearts developers and producers!

Guild Wars 2 : The State of the Economy

The Guild Wars 2 blog has been updated with a new article from ArenaNet’s John Smith. In it, Smith discusses the economy and ways the team has been working since launch to improve it and make it more balanced. Included in the article, Smith the closure of exploits and how players can potentially use surplus items to create something cool through the use of special recipes.
We’ve noticed several markets that are clearly out of sync in terms of supply and demand. It isn’t interesting or fun to have a market flooded with items that contain very little value, so we’re making adjustments to the game every day. Players can expect to see these markets even out over time.

While adjusting the supply and demand will bring markets closer to non-vendor based equilibrium, there is still the matter of massive surplus of some items. To address the surplus, we’ve created some new, limited-time Mystic Forge recipes that use these items. These recipes create boxes that give chances for gold and some cool items.

One of the most anticipated features in Funcom’s The Secret World is running through dungeons with other players, dungeons that literally take everyone to hell (and hopefully back again). Our team got some hands on experience doing just that and we’ve got the full report. Read on!

I’m not one that’s prone to complain.  Generally, even as a critic, I can find the upsides of every negative.  I’m habitually and uncontrollably a “glass half full” kind of guy.  Still that doesn’t mean I’m content with everything to remain as is because there’s no room for improvement.  I love MMOs, and I’ve long since learned that their weaknesses are sometimes what define them as a genre of games.  There’s a growing sentiment that ugamesmall.comaren’t evolving but rather remaining stagnant because of some cynical viewpoint that everyone just wants to duplicate WoW’s success.  I think companies are starting to realize that WoW is a fluke of the industry, and hopefully that means that the designers will be able to seek what designers should always strive for: innovation.  It may be incremental, but I do believe the evolution of the MMO is already underway with currently released titles and those on the horizon.  Here then is a laundry list of things I’d love to see touched by innovation

Issue #2 does not disappoint. In the opening pages we get a taste of what plagues the men of the north.

Even Jacobs own people, who are described as being NOT barbarians, seem to be suffering from a dreadful force of some kind, an affliction of blood. In a rather dark but intriguing scene we discover why Jacob has left his home, being forced into combat with his own father. Then, just like that we are back in the present and are introduced to a woman who seems likely to be Jacob’s constant companion throughout this unfolding story. Whether this wizard, named Shanar, truly means well for Jacob is open to debate. I certainly was left with the sense that she was not telling young Jacob everything. Regardless her introduction does serve to inform the reader of some more grandious lore behind the Diablo universe, the Crystal Arch. First discussed in the Book of Cain, this artifact of perfect beauty resides in the High Heavens and resonates with a song that not only brings Angels into being but also somehow can shape the paths of humans. Again I was highly intrigued and can’t wait to find out more.

But before we can find out more Jacob’s past catches up with him and his pursuant countrymen attack. It seems they too possess this strange affliction of blood that drives them to act like wild beasts more than civilized men. Jacob takes up the Sword of Justice to defend himself but is reluctant to kill any of his attackers and ends up being captured and forced to witness more of his countrymen’s depravity. Luckily he is rescued by Shanar and the chase continues. I particularly appreciated the blast from the past as Jacob and Shanar flee through the black marsh, stumbling upon the ruins of the Forgotten Tower (of Diablo 2 fame). In typical comic book cliff hanger fashion, the final page introduces us to a new unforeseen foe. I guess we’ll have to wait for the next issue to find out more.

Aside from a decently interesting storyline both issues feature an art style that does a great job of evoking a sense of the menacing dark tones that make the Diablo franchise what it is. The angular and brusque line art of Joseph Lacroix and the very Diablo-ish color palette employed by Dave Stewart somehow stand set apart from Blizzard’s usual artistic style yet still manage to feel very Diablo. Both artists also did a fantastic job of portraying the infiltration of the sinister affliction of the Barbarians upon the men of the north, and left me wanting to know more.

If issues one and two are any indication, I think “The Sword of Justice” series will be both a highly entertaining read and also a great medium for advancing the lore of the Diablo franchise. So on both counts I applaud Blizzard and DC Comics. My only worry is that with only 3 more issues it seems like there is a lot of ground to cover to bring this story to completion. Of course who is to say that the story of Tyrael’s sword will end with this comic series?  And of course there is always the impending release date announcement of a certain video game that is sure to be chalk full of lore goodies.
