World of Warcraft Naming Policy

Our naming policy rules apply to all player chosen names in-game. Please note that we are not able to change names upon request. If your character has a name that does not violate our naming policies, but you would still like to change it, please have a look at our Name Change service.
If you see a name that you feel violates our naming guidelines, please report it using the in-game reporting feature.

Highly Inappropriate
Names that fall under the following categories are deemed to be highly inappropriate and will be met with appropriate action.

Racial/Ethnic/National
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

Have any racial/ethnic connotations
Have any national connotations

Extreme Sexuality/Violence
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

Refer to extreme and/or violent sexual acts
Refer to extremely violent real life actions

Sexual Orientation
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

Negatively refer to any aspect of sexual orientation pertaining to themselves or other players

Obscene/Vulgar
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

Are inappropriate references to human anatomy or bodily functions
Are pornographic in nature

Moderately Inappropriate
Names which fall under the following categories are deemed to be mildly inappropriate and will be met with appropriate action.

Harassing or Defamatory

Insultingly refer to other characters, players, Blizzard employees, or groups of people, be they in the game or external

Titles (Does not apply to Guild, Arena Team or Pet Names)
Fantasy titles should be earned through the mechanics of the game, and should not be recreated through character naming. This category includes names which:

Consist of any title prefix attached to a character’s name be it fantasy-based or not (e.g. Kingmike, Presidentsanchez)

Real World References
This category includes names which:

Consist of any references to the real world, including people and places (Britneyspears, Newyork, Austinpowers)

Violating any area of the policy detailed above may result in a suspension from the game. For questions concerning our penalty system, please see the Account Penalties page.
Characters, guilds, pets, and arena team names found to be in violation of the above policies will be assigned a randomly generated temporary name. An E-mail will be sent to the account’s registered E-mail address with instructions on how to change the temporary name to one of the player’s choosing. In cases of guild or arena names, the message will be sent to the guild or arena team leader.

Role-playing Realms Policy

Harassment

Verbal/Physical Harassment Targeting Role-Players
This category includes:

Players that specifically target role-players for verbal or physical abuse (not limited to offensive language).

If a player is found to be targeting role-players with the specific intent to harass, they may be temporarily suspended from the game.

Naming

Non-Medieval/Fantasy Character Names
This category includes any Non-Medieval or Non-Fantasy names (i.e. Slipnslide, Robotman, Technotron).
If a player is found to have such a name, he/she may:

Be assigned a randomly generated name
Be given the appropriate additional penalty if the name violates standard naming rules.

Real World Referencing Names
This category includes both clear and masked names which are references to very well known people, characters, places, or icons (i.e. Britneyspears, Austinpowers, Mcdonalds, Georgewashington, Newyork)
If a player is found to have such a name, he/she may:

Be assigned a randomly generated name
Be given the appropriate additional penalty if the name violates standard naming rules.

Partial or Complete Sentence Names
This category includes names which consist of multiple (generally more than 2) words strung together to create partial or complete sentences (i.e. Inyourface, Welovebeef, Howareyou)
If a player is found to have such a name, that player may:

Be assigned a randomly generated name
Be given the appropriate additional penalty if the name violates standard naming rules.

These policies are applied in addition to the policies currently being enforced on all servers.
Repeatedly violating any part of the Role-Play Server policy, as well as any part of the Terms of Use (ToU), will often result in temporary suspension from the game.

In playing this game, you will encounter thousands of other players who share different experiences and come from vastly different character backgrounds than your own. Remember to be respectful of those around you.

Game Master Interaction

At some point, you may interact with a Game Master (GM). It is important to be sure you are speaking to a real GM. There are three methods by which a GM may contact you:

Via In-game chat
Via email
In person

Communicating with a Game Master

In-Game Chat
Most often, Game Masters will contact you in-game via whispers. Game Master chat shows in its own chat widow.  In order to access the GM Chat Window you must first click on the GM Chat Request icon located in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. This icon will only appear if a GM is attempting to contact you and will blink with a blue border any time a message is received.
Unable to see the GM Chat Request Icon or Chat Window
There may be some UI modifications that could cause the GM Chat Request icon to be invisible. To prevent this from occurring, we recommend that you restore your UI to its default settings.

Ticket Icons Disappearing
If we are unable to reach you in-game or if the issue does not require any further information, the GM may send an in-game message to the character that submitted the ticket. You can also see all ticket responses in your Ticket Status page.
Note: Check both locations before resubmitting a ticket.

In Person
Rarely, a GM may need to make themselves visible when contacting you. Visible GMs can be identified by the  tag that is located above their avatar as shown below.
Email
All email communications from GMs will now come from noreply@blizzard.com. If there is any doubt about the authenticity of any email you receive from an @blizzard.com address, we suggest you visit our Account Security page for more information about scams, phishing e-mails and security in general.

Game Master Interaction Policies
Once you have established that you are communicating with a real Blizzard Entertainment representative, please ensure that you keep the following policies in mind. We take violations of these policies very seriously, and any behavior that goes against the policies listed below may result in penalties against the violating account.

Impersonating a GM
Some players may attempt to use the authority of the GMs to take advantage of others. All GMs will contact players using one of the methods detailed above. If someone claiming to be a GM does not appear this way, they are not official Blizzard Entertainment employees and should be reported to the GM staff.

Defrauding or Attempting to Defraud a GM
If we find that an attempt was made to defraud a GM, the offending player may have action taken against them. Attempts to defraud a GM include, but are not limited to, misdirecting a GM’s attention, withholding information, providing false information, and any attempt to trick a GM.

Disobeying or Ignoring GM Instructions
At times it may be necessary for a GM to instruct a player to perform (or refrain from performing) certain actions. In any event, the GMs will be attempting to preserve the enjoyment of the game for the majority of players. Disobeying or ignoring a GM’s instructions may result in an account penalty.

Harassing the GM Staff
Time spent dealing with issues that have already been closed keeps the GM staff from addressing other players’ pressing issues. If a single player or multiple players repeatedly send abusive tells, abusive tickets, or multiple tickets on the same closed issue to the GM staff, or otherwise misuse our reporting system, they will be asked to stop, and if they continue, may receive an account penalty.

Excessive use of Abusive Language
It is understandable that a player contacting the GM staff might be upset over an issue they experienced in the game. However, the use of abusive or foul language directed toward the GM Staff is inappropriate and unproductive. If a player uses this type of language when communicating with a GM, they will be asked to stop. If they continue, they may receive an account penalty.
Violating any area of the Terms of Use (ToU), including the areas detailed above, will often result in temporary suspension from the game.

It is important to follow these guidelines when dealing with Game Masters. A GM will never ask you to do anything that would compromise an account or its personal information. GMs will make every attempt to show you the respect you deserve. We ask that you show us the same respect. We take no joy in assigning account penalties, but sometimes must do so to preserve the integrity of the game.

The Game Client

The “World of Warcraft” program you install on your computer is the client, which has four primary duties. The client:
decodes and displays the data that make up the game world, as well as the user interface (UI) and any associated addons.
receives input from you and from a remote server and changes the game display accordingly.
gives feedback to you and the server, based on what’s happening in the game.
keeps up with any changes you make to your game’s layout and settings.
The client gets a large portion of its data from archives stored on the computer’s hard drive. Much of the visual information is stored in MPQ format, an archive format proprietary to Blizzard. Sounds are generally stored as WAV or MP3 files. As players move through the world, the client caches some of this information in a folder for faster access.
The client isn’t static — it changes as the game develops. Blizzard releases patches to “World of Warcraft” to fix bugs, adjust game play issues and add new content, like quests and dungeons. Lots of players access the game world simultaneously, and each one has to be able to see the same features and operate under the same rules. For this reason, Blizzard pushes new patches to each player’s computer. When you open your game after a new patch has been released, your client will automatically download and install the patch. Blizzard’s background downloader can also download pieces of the patch that are ready for release ahead of time to cut down on the amount of time it takes to get a patch.
Separate from the client, but related to it, is the game launcher. The launcher is a small program that provides hyperlinks to new information at the Blizzard Web site. It also lets you know when new patch information is ready to download and opens your game itself. The launcher can also check your computer for viruses, hacks and cheating software and warn you if it finds them.

World of Warcraft Players

As of July 2007, “World of Warcraft” had more than 9 million active subscribers worldwide [source: Blizzard, press release]. While there’s no publicly-available, comprehensive census of exactly who plays the game, there are several researchers who have studied WoW players extensively.
Researcher Nick Yee has used online surveys to poll “World of Warcraft” players about themselves and their characters. These responses come from a self-selected group, or people who have decided for themselves to visit Yee’s Web site and fill out the survey. This means that the results may not represent the world’s demographics as accurately as a random sample would. Instead, it may reflect a particular subset of players — those who are serious enough about the game to research it online and to feel motivated to spend time answering questions about it.
According to one of Yee’s 2005 studies, 84 percent of “World of Warcraft” players are male, and 16 percent are female. The average player’s age is 28, and female players tend to be a few years older than male players. Regardless of their gender, players spend an average of 21 to 22 hours a week playing the game [source: Yee, WoW Demographics]. Of course, these statistics may have shifted since Yee collected his data. You can learn more about Yee’s research at The Daedalus Project.
The amount of time people spend in the game world depends in part on their characters’ levels. According to research conducted at the Palo Alto Research Center in 2005, players tend to put in an extra burst of playing time when a character is about to reach a milestone level. At the time of the study, players gained access to a mount, such as a horse, tiger or kodo, at level 40. The study showed a spike in play time leading up to level 40 that was even greater than the spike leading to level 60, which was the highest possible level when the study was conducted. However, once people reach the highest levels, they generally spend more time playing than they did at lower levels [source: PARC, Playing Time]. Now, players gain mounts at level 30 and top out at level 80 with “Wrath of the Lich King” installed.
These numbers relate to one of the reasons people play “World of Warcraft” and similar games — for the feeling of accomplishment that comes from in-game achievement. But there are also other reasons for participation in the online world, including:
Socializing with real-life or in-game friends
Exploring the virtual world
Competing against real or virtual opponents
Researcher Richard Bartle placed these four types into four categories, described as achievers, socializers, explorers and killers. This has become a commonly-used model for describing how and why people participate in role-playing games.
You can also describe “World of Warcraft” players in terms of which activities they participate in while playing. Hardcore raiders spend most of their time in high-level dungeons. Other players spend most of their time in player-versus-player (PvP) environments. Some PvP enthusiasts are twinks, or players who advance to a particular level and then acquire lots of gear that will make them more powerful than other players of the same level. Then, there are the casual players, who may enter raid dungeons and PvP battlegrounds but who don’t spend their game time focusing on them exclusively.
Regardless of exactly what people are doing in the game, they’re using the same basic tool to access the world — a computer. Next, we’ll look at the “World of Warcraft” client and how it runs.

How World of Warcraft Works

Imagine it’s the night before patch day. You’ve parked your level-70 character, decked out in epic gear, outside what will soon be the forest ruins of Zul’Aman. Right now, it’s just rocky pavilion with huge, wooden gates you can’t open. But tomorrow, it will become the entrance to a dungeon full of trolls. You and nine of your friends hope to be the first players on your server to go inside.
It’s a risky proposition — and not just because Zul’Aman is full of enemies that are far more powerful than you are. Zul’Aman is an addition to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) “World of Warcraft,” or WoW. As anyone who plays the game can tell you, making additions or changes to such an immense, dynamic world can cause some problems. On patch day, players often experience everything from server instability to problems with their user interface (UI) and addons. Players did get into Zul’Aman the day its patch went live, but only after the servers were down for hours of extended maintenance. And that didn’t quite rival hours of downtime spread across two days just before the launch of the most recent “World of Warcraft” expansion, “Wrath of the Lich King.”
Patch-day technical difficulties and the joy of exploring a new dungeon both come from the same basic source — the enormous collision of people and data. The game worlds of Azeroth and Outland include 60 regions spread out across four continents. Each region has its own landscape and inhabitants — both friendly and unfriendly — and sometimes its own weather. Then there are representations of players’ characters and everything they wear, carry and use. You can boil all of this down to ones and zeros stored on computer hard drives.
Players interact with all this data using their computers and an Internet connection. The players’ computers store some of the data, and a remote server provides the rest. As one player interacts with the world, the world changes for other players — the movement of data back and forth between the computer and the server allows this to happen.
Multiply this information by the thousands of players who can log on to a particular server at the same time, and the amount of traveling data becomes staggering. All the people playing the game also have the potential to make unpredictable decisions, making the exact interactions between players and the game hard to predict. When you think about the game in terms of so much traveling data, it’s not surprising that patches and updates can have far-reaching effects.
In this article, we’ll look at what it takes for data to become an interactive, persistent game world. We’ll also explore the game’s architecture and the people it takes to keep the game running. We’ll begin with the human factor — the people who play “World of Warcraft” and why they play it.

BFS legend

WoW commendation NPCs not going anywhere

Inthe lighter side of news, inquiries to whether commendation NPCs (whosepurpose you’d probably have pondered at one time or another) should beremoved from the World of Warcraft realms or not were responded to with a resounding no. New Blizzard community manager Bornakkclaimed that despite their imposing annoyance to certain players forvaried reasons, there were no plans to remove such NPCs from the game:

We made sure that these NPCs were properly trained not to bite anybodypassing by or talking to them. No reports have come in to say that theyhave broken this (so far), so we are fine leaving them in the game forthe time being to help anybody they can.

Bornakk’sresponse was followed with a good share of reasons why the NPCs shouldbe removed, such as apparent confusion with newcomers as to the NPCs’actual purpose as well as a decaying provision of commendations to turnin. Players of the original World of Warcraft content, denizens in Azeroth, may continue to find a use with commendation NPCs, however.

Butthere are a few players in Outlands that have yet to turn in theircollection of commendations, so the concern over the NPCs having no useis arguable. In the end, it does play down to cautious approaches forthe unforeseen. After all, it’s better to have it and not need it, thanto need it and not have it.
